Attackers broke into the email account of a CDU Heilbronn district executive and used the trusted mailbox to send roughly 6,500 fake messages. The emails used an event invitation as a lure and directed recipients to a link for a supposed document, making this a credible internal-email phishing scenario.

Key findings

  • Unknown attackers accessed the CDU Heilbronn district association's email account for district executive Bernd Sepbach.
  • The compromised account was used to send what police estimated were around 6,500 forged messages.
  • Recipients included ministries, political contacts, and many security-relevant addresses.
  • The messages used an invitation to the '19. Böckinger Prominentenpredigt' as a lure and included a link to an alleged document.
  • The association warned recipients not to open links or attachments and advised Microsoft 365 users to change passwords, end sessions, and check forwarding rules.

Who’s being targeted

  • Commonly targeted roles: Government staff, Political organization staff, Executive assistants, Communications teams, Security-related personnel, Microsoft 365 users.
  • Affected industries: Political organizations, Government, Public administration, Security-related organizations.
  • Attack channels: email.
  • Impersonated: CDU-Kreisverband Heilbronn / the compromised mailbox of district executive Bernd Sepbach.

Awareness takeaways

  • Treat unexpected links in messages from known contacts as suspicious, especially when they promise a document or event information.
  • Do not assume an email is safe simply because it comes from a trusted internal or partner account; verify unusual requests through a separate, known contact method.
  • If an organizational Microsoft 365 mailbox may be compromised, change its password, end active sessions, and inspect forwarding settings immediately.

Red flags to watch for

  • An unexpected link is presented as a document.
  • The message comes from a trusted political contact but is sent following mailbox compromise.
  • The event invitation is used to create urgency or curiosity rather than providing a normal verified document route.

An invitation from Bernd Sepbach’s CDU mailbox? That sounds legitimate. But that mailbox was compromised. Roughly 6,500 messages went out, including to ministries and security-related addresses. Each invitation pointed to an alleged document. Here’s the catch: the sender really was a known contact. The unexpected document link, not the sender name, is your warning sign. Get an invitation like this? Don’t open the link. Call your contact using a number you already know.
