Gift Card Phishers Target Retail Staff

Unit 42 · Medium sophistication
Last updated October 28, 2026

Retailers face a peak-season gift-card fraud campaign in which attackers use phishing emails and text messages to trick employees into giving up credentials. After gaining access, the attackers use cloud systems and sensitive data to issue unauthorized gift cards at scale and convert them into money.

Key findings

  • Unit 42 tracked the Jingle Thief gift-card fraud activity as CL-CRI-1032, also known as Storm-0539.
  • The actors use phishing and smishing to obtain employee credentials at targeted retailers.
  • After initial access, the actors exploit cloud-based infrastructure, access sensitive data, and create unauthorized gift cards for financial gain.
  • Retail peak shopping periods increase the value of gift cards and create a timely lure for fraud-focused attackers.
  • The article also describes real retail threats including ransomware, data extortion, DDoS, digital skimming, credential stuffing, and AI-assisted intrusions.

Who’s being targeted

  • Commonly targeted roles: Retail employees, Gift card operations, E-commerce teams, Customer service teams, Finance and payments teams, IT and cloud administrators.
  • Affected industries: Retail, E-commerce, Retail payment services, Retail distribution and logistics.
  • Attack channels: email, smishing.
  • Impersonated: Retail gift-card or cloud-service administrator.

Awareness takeaways

  • Treat unexpected holiday-period messages asking for work credentials as suspicious, whether they arrive by email or text.
  • Employees who manage gift cards, customer accounts, or cloud services should verify access requests through an approved internal contact method before signing in.
  • Give heightened scrutiny to gift-card-related requests during peak shopping periods, when fraudsters expect higher transaction volumes and faster employee responses.

Red flags to watch for

  • An unexpected request to verify credentials during the busy holiday period.
  • A message involving gift-card administration that was not requested through normal internal processes.
  • A sign-in request from an unfamiliar sender or website.
  • An unsolicited text asks for work-account credentials.
  • Urgency tied to holiday operations or gift-card availability.
  • A link directs the employee to sign in outside the organization’s normal application path.

Holiday rush. A text says: ‘Verify your gift-card access now.’ An email may say: ‘Action required: Verify your holiday gift-card administration account.’ The link opens an unfamiliar sign-in page. Enter your work credentials, and Jingle Thief has a way in. Here’s the catch: they don’t need your gift-card balance. They need your login. From there, they can reach cloud systems and issue unauthorized gift cards at scale. Unexpected holiday verification request? Don’t use its link. Confirm it with your gift-card administrator through your approved internal contact.
